Station E – COMMUNICATIONS (SINCGARS) – Point E-2

TASK: Operate as a station in a radio net with SINCGARS radio single channel

TEST CONDITIONS: Given one AN/PRC 119 with single-channel frequency and COMSEC fill preinstalled and ready to use, an SOI extract or ANCD, and one information card consisting of sending station duty position, receiving station duty position, and a message to transmit.

TEST STANDARDS:

1. Find and annotate proper call signs for sending station and receiving station.

2. Establish communications with distant station using proper call signs and prowords.

3. Send message using proper phonetic alphabet and numerals with 100 percent accuracy.

4. Authenticate if required by NCS.

5. Complete the task within ten minutes.

MANUAL CROSSWALK: This task is based on TM 11-5820 890 10 8 and FM 24 19, Chapter 5.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: SOI extract or ANCD with SOI information data installed, two AN/PRC 119 radios complete with COMSEC fill preloaded for single-channel secure mode, two field tables, a pencil, a ballpoint pen, a stopwatch, a clipboard, a basic message to transmit (printed on a 3- x 5-inch card) to include the sending station’s duty position, the receiving station’s duty position, the time period, and an FB Form 20 18.2 R.

SITE SETUP: Place the AN/PRC 119 radio and the SOI extract or ANCD on a table. Provide enough room on the table for the candidate to use the SOI extract or ANCD comfortably. Set up a distant station to receive the message.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: Say to the candidates–

“Let me have your attention. At this station you must do the following:

  • Find your correct call sign and the call sign of the distant station.
  • Use an SOI extract or ANCD.
  • Send a message using proper prowords, phonetic alphabet, and numerals with 100 percent accuracy.
  • Act as platoon leader. Find on your table a message (along with time period and unit) printed on the 3- x 5-inch card. Send this message to your company commander.
  • Complete this task in ten minutes.
  • “Do you have any questions?”

    If anyone has questions, repeat the instructions but do not elaborate on what you have read.

    Do not penalize the candidate if the equipment fails.

    Pause five seconds and then say–

    “BEGIN.”

    Allow the candidate to proceed for ten minutes and then say–

    “STOP.
