Colleges - Degrees in Social Science

Social scientists--anthropologists, historians, sociologists, economists, market and survey researchers, and psychologists--study societal relationships, individual behavior and past and present cultures. Students interested in social science programs should consider military friendly social science colleges, since many social science disciplines require at least a bachelor's or master's degree and many positions require a doctorate. It typically takes four years to complete a bachelor's degree, while a master's degree is an additional two years and a doctorate, four or five years. Using GI Bill and other military education benefits can significantly reduce the cost of financing these degrees.

Career opportunities after earning a social science degree

There are a variety of career opportunities for social science school graduates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides data as of May 2009 on mean annual salaries for these social science-related jobs:

  • Market research analysts, $67,500
  • Anthropologists and archaeologists, $57,230
  • Political scientists, $101,050.

According to the BLS, job growth projected between 2008 and 20018 for market research analysts is 28 percent; for anthropologists and archaeologists, 26 percent; and for political scientists, 19 percent.
