Colleges - Degrees in Art & Design

Graduates of art & design schools have gone on to become graphic designers, illustrators, multimedia artists and animators, interior designers and craft artists. The specific education and training required for a career in art & design, however, may differ depending on the chosen career path.

Graphic designers or multimedia artists, for example, must have at least a bachelor's degree because of the technical skills required. While formal training for a career as a fine artist or craft artist is not required, art & design programs can help develop the skills and techniques necessary to earn a living.

Active duty personnel, veterans and their families can make use of a range of military education benefit programs at military friendly art & design colleges.

Job Prospects for Art & Design School Graduates

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a wide range of mean annual salaries for art & design occupations in 2009:

  • Art directors: $91,520
  • Fine artists: $50,630
  • Graphic designers: $47,820
  • Multimedia artists: $62,810

The BLS also reports strong job growth for art & design careers between 2008 to 2018, with the fields of interior designers growing by 19 percent, multimedia artists by 14 percent and graphic designers by 13 percent.

Creative servicemembers planning a career after the military can look into art & design colleges for programs that accept their military education benefits and offer coursework for their career choices.
