Hundreds of Army missions depend on aircraft for transport, patrol and flight training. It’s up to the members of the aircraft repair team to ensure that all Army aircraft remain safe and ready to fly. As an integral member of this team, the Aircraft Powertrain Repairer inspects, services and repairs Army helicopters and airplanes.
The Aircraft Powertrain Repairer is primarily responsible for supervising, inspecting and performing maintenance on aircraft powertrain systems. Here are the specific duties of an Aircraft Powertrain Repairer:
- Remove and replace powertrain quills, transmission adapting parts, rotary wing hub and tanks
- Disassemble friction dampers and hangar assemblies
- Disassemble, repair, reassemble, adjust, balance and align powertrain components
- Perform operator maintenance on ground support equipment, common and special tools
- Maintain facilities for storage of flammable and hazardous materials
- Maintain shop and bench stock for repair of aircraft engines
- Prepare requests for turn-ins and repair parts and engine components
Job training for an Aircraft Powertrain Repairer consists of nine weeks of Basic Training, where you’ll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including inspection and repair of aircraft engines and equipment. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you’ll learn are:
- Engine disassembly and repair
- Repair of hydraulic, fuel and electrical systems
- Repair of aluminum, steel and fiberglass airframes and coverings
Helpful attributes include:

- An ability to use hand and power tools
Advanced level Aircraft Powertrain Repairers supervise and train other Soldiers. As an advanced level Aircraft Powertrain Repairer, you may also be involved in:
- Performing operational checks and scheduled inspections
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting malfunctions in aircraft powertrain components
- Participating in maintenance test flights as required
- Performs maintenance trend analysis and applies production control, quality control and other maintenance management principles and procedures to aircraft powertrain system maintenance, nondestructive inspection and shop operations.
- Evaluates maintenance operations and facilities for compliance with directives, technical manuals, work standards, safety procedures and operational policies.
- Instructs personnel and conducts technical training in aircraft powertrain system maintenance, nondestructive inspection, supply and safety techniques.
- Evaluates the technical training program.
- Monitors requisition of parts, tools, and supplies
