What is the Drill Sergeant Assignment Preference Program (DSAPP)?

Upon successful completion of drill sergeant duty, the U.S. Total Army Personnel Command (HRC) is committed to assign you to one of your assignment preferences.

Effective immediately, Drill Sergeants (DS) will now submit their top 3 choices solely in the VOLUNTEER portion of ASK instead of the Preference location. The Volunteer portion will allow for both CONUS and OCONUS expanded selections. This revision is a result of feedback from DSs and the leaders in the field. THIS WE’LL DEFEND!

NEW UPDATE

Although the Preference Program is still in effect, due to current Army-wide deployments and ongoing changes THE NEEDS OF THE ARMY may dictate your next assignment. You should still submit your requests via ASK. You can also contact your Branch manager around 120-90 days from release to request assignment. If your Branch is unable to assign you to one of the locations that you requested you will be assigned to fulfill Army requirements.

This action is covered in AR 614-200 paragraph 3-3 section D

WHAT IS THE DRILL SERGEANT ASSIGNMENT PREFERENCE PROGRAM (DSAPP)?

Upon successful completion of drill sergeant duty, the U.S. Total Army Personnel Command (HRC) is committed to assign you to one of your assignment preferences. To assist assignment managers, you must ensure your preferences are posted to the Total Amy Personnel Database (TAPDB). You may post your preferences through an easily accessible web application. Your assignment manager will assign you to one of your preferences. If there is not a valid requirement at your location preference, your assignment manager will contact you and inform you of the assignments that are available in order to negotiate an agreement in accordance with the Drill Sergeant Assignment Preference Program.

HOW DO I UPDATE MY DSAPP PREFERENCES?

You can update assignment preferences and related information through a newly developed web application. The “Assignment Satisfaction Key” or “ASK” Internet tool provides you the capability to post assignment preference information directly to the Total Army Personnel Database (TAPDB).

DS will need an Army Knowledge Online (AKO) account password to gain access to their assignment preference information. Click on the AKO symbol below to register for an AKO account.

ATTENTION: ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO BE A DRILL SERGEANT, YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED BY AKO EMAIL. PLEASE, LIMIT YOUR PHONE CALLS REGARDING STATUS OF YOUR PACKET.

Soldiers you can now submit your assignment preference’s directly to your career branch. In order for you to use this new initiative you must have a Army Knowledge Online Account established. Read MILPER MESSAGE 02-005 for more information. Click on the ASK key below to access this new feature or the AKO portal to establish an account.
