Possible Effects on Baby: Can be transmitted to baby during delivery if mother has blisters near term. Can cause severe disease and death of newborn but transmission is extremely rare, even with vaginal births.

Signs and Symptoms of Infection: Fluid-filled sores in the genital area that may itch, burn, tingle or cause pain.

Treatment: If active infection occurs at or near your delivery date, you may need a cesarean section within 4 to 6 hours of your bag of waters breaking.

Testing: Tell your health care provider immediately if you think you have an outbreak (looks like warts), Cultures of the blisters can be done.
