West Virginia is rich in history, including that it became a state during the Civil War, when it separated from Virginia. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, is an historic community with museums and preserved battlefields. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park exhibits sites from the country's canal era. The C&O Canal is 184 miles long.

West Virginia's eight National Park Service sites include The New River Gorge National River, on 70,000 acres, and The Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, which is made up of over 160 sites. There are also ten state parks here, with lodge rooms, cabins, and tents.

West Virginia is home to a National Guard unit at Camp Dawson, and is prominent in the preservation of regional folk music. Charleston, the state capital and its largest city, hosts The Vandalia Gathering in the spring a celebration of Appalachian music, and another festival is held at the Augusta heritage Center from April through October.
