Colleges in Virginia
Virginia was founded in 1607 in Jamestown, and its rich history is evident everywhere in the state. The Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center in Colonial National Historical Park, are two of the country's most important historic sites.
The 31 National Park Service sites in this state also include Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where the Civil War ended, and Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, which commemorates some of the war's most horrific battles. Its capital, Richmond, was the capital of the Confederacy. It's preserved many wartime hospitals, prisons, churches and other sites. There are also market acres and tobacco houses dating back to the period.
There are eight U.S. Army bases in Virginia, including the 9,000 acres of Fort Eustis, a training center which houses the US Army Transportation Corps. Fort Belvoir is uniquely important to The Department of Defense. It supports 90 resident and satellite organizations, and it's home to two Army major command headquarters and ten Army major commands. Fort Monroe is noted for extraordinary historic preservation, aside from its military service. In 1609 the English built Fort Algernourne to protect the Jamestown colony.
