Station L – M60 MACHINE GUN – Point L-2

TASKS: 1. Load an M60 machine gun.

2. Correct malfunctions on an M60 machine gun.

3. Unload an M60 machine gun.

TEST CONDITIONS: During daylight, given an M60 machine gun, a five round belt of linked 7.62 mm blank ammunition, a dummy round inserted into the belt, and a requirement to expend all rounds in the belt.

TEST STANDARDS:

1. Load the gun within ten seconds.

2. Fire and apply immediate action within ten seconds.

3. Unload and clear the gun within ten seconds.

SOLDIER’S MANUAL CROSSWALK: These tasks are the same as STP 21 1 SMCT tasks 071 312 3027, 071 312 3028, and 071 312 3029.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: An M60 machine gun, a five round belt of linked 7.62 mm blank ammunition with a dummy round inserted into middle of belt (two rounds on either side), stopwatch, clipboard, pencil, field table, and FB Form 20 29.3 R.

SITE SETUP: Place a bipod mounted M60 machine gun on the test site. Place the weapon on SAFE, the bolt and cocking handle forward, and the linked belt of five rounds on top of the cover.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: Say to the candidates–

“Let me have your attention. At this point you must load an M60 machine gun and perform immediate action on an M60 machine gun.

“You will load the M60 machine gun within ten seconds. Then, we will tell you to fire and apply immediate action within ten seconds. Finally, you must unload and clear the machine gun within ten seconds. You will do all of these while you remain in the prone position. Do you understand what you must do?”

If anyone has questions, repeat the instructions but do not elaborate on what you have read.

Pause five seconds and then say–

“Load the machine gun. BEGIN.”

Allow the candidate to proceed for ten seconds and then say–

“STOP. Fire and apply immediate action. BEGIN.”

Allow the candidate to proceed for ten seconds and then say–

“STOP. Unload and clear the machine gun. BEGIN.”

Allow the candidate to proceed for ten seconds and then say “STOP”
